'Every child is a artist.' - Pablo Picasso

At Holden Clough Primary School, we believe that art is a powerful form of expression that fosters creativity, imagination, and personal growth. Our Art curriculum is designed to inspire a love of art in all our pupils, providing them with opportunities to explore their creativity and develop the skills and confidence to express themselves through a range of artistic media.

Intent

Our Art curriculum aims to:

  • Inspire creativity and self-expression, allowing children to explore their own ideas and communicate their thoughts and feelings through art.
  • Develop a deep understanding and appreciation of different artistic styles, techniques, and cultural traditions.
  • Equip children with a broad range of artistic skills, from drawing and painting to sculpture, collage, and digital media.
  • Foster critical thinking and observational skills, encouraging pupils to reflect on their own work and the work of others.
  • Build resilience and confidence as children learn to experiment, take risks, and explore their ideas in an open-ended way.

We aim to develop a passion for art and design that stays with our pupils throughout their lives, enhancing their well-being and providing them with an outlet for creativity.

Implementation

Our Art curriculum is delivered through an engaging, hands-on approach that encourages exploration, experimentation, and creative thinking:

  • Creative Exploration: Pupils are encouraged to explore a variety of techniques and materials, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, and digital art.
  • Famous Artists and Movements: Children study the work of famous artists, designers, and architects from different cultures and periods, developing an appreciation for art history and cultural diversity.
  • Cross-Curricular Connections: We integrate art with other subjects, allowing children to explore themes and ideas through a creative lens.
  • Skills Progression: Our curriculum ensures that artistic skills are developed progressively, with children building on prior knowledge and gaining increasing control over materials and techniques.
  • Art Exhibitions: Pupils regularly showcase their artwork in school displays, exhibitions, and competitions, providing them with a sense of pride and achievement.
  • Art Days and Workshops: Special themed days and workshops with local artists allow children to explore new techniques and take inspiration from professional creatives.

We encourage pupils to take risks with their art and explore their own style, ensuring that every child’s creative voice is heard and celebrated.

Impact

The impact of our Art curriculum is reflected in:

  • Creative Expression: Pupils develop the confidence to express themselves through art, exploring their own ideas and experimenting with different materials and techniques.
  • Artistic Skills: Children gain proficiency in a wide range of artistic techniques and develop their ability to communicate visually.
  • Cultural Awareness: Through the study of different artists and artistic traditions, pupils gain a broader understanding of cultural diversity and the role of art in society.
  • Confidence and Resilience: Pupils learn to take creative risks, persevere with challenging projects, and reflect critically on their own work, helping them build resilience and problem-solving skills.
  • Pride in Achievement: Children take pride in their artistic achievements, gaining a sense of accomplishment when their work is displayed and celebrated within the school community.

Our Art curriculum ensures that every child at Holden Clough has the opportunity to discover and develop their creative talents, gaining the skills and confidence to express themselves artistically and appreciate the world of art around them.
